This year 2006 became a special period. We have obtained an historical number as far as effective donors and transplants done it, surpassing for the first time in history, 150 actual donors (152 in 2006). We believe the successive creation of positions of Procurement Hospitals Coordinators is showing its first fruits but to progress in time, they must go associated to other strategies such as: to repeat these positions to other hospitals and the involution of Procurement Units as a central structure to strong the acting of Coordinators and priories the organs obtaining activity in the intrahospital environment .
Once again, it grows the proportion of males (64%) versus females (36%), maintaining the proportion between traumatic brain injury , where most of them are young males, and for spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage, correspond to females. In similar what happens in developed countries; the main cause of brain death is BVA (Brain Vascular Accident), 53%, after the CET (Cranial Encephalic Trauma) 37%, and in a uncommon cause hypoxic brain injury and brain tumor even less than 2%.
Even the age average is still, under 40 years ( 39), the curve is moving towards older donors . If we compare with 2005, the sum of the intervals 45-54 and 55-64 grows from a 32% to a 40% against the interval 35-44 years.
This "own aging" of developed countries goes of the hand of the greater proportion of donors passed away by CET. The family refusal between 2005 and 2006 it holds in a stationary value of 39%, corresponding to the most high value in the last 6 years. Although it is certain, this increase would be explain in a indirect way for a mayor notification of potential donors by the different procurement centers, it is not less certain that family refusal it is still the reflects of social perception of people faced to organ donation issue, so, these high numbers must put to think and worry our authorities to work with our society not only in media or campaign level, but in a more important way, at educational plan in a cross-sectional and continuous way . Contrary to which it is created within the causes of refusal to the donation ; the religious, problems of credibility in the concept of encephalic death, as fears to the possible mutilation of the donor are in marginal values. The most important reasons, continue being the refusal of the familiar group and the refusal in life of the deceased. Of all ways, most worrisome, is the progressive ascent of the refusal in life in decline familiar conflict. This translates that the message to talk in family the subject has been effective, but is conditional a negative will to the donation The reasons for it, apparently, and by conclusions taken from surveys in mass media they would be in doubts and fears as opposed to the transparency of the system of donation and transplants in Chile. For that reason the future efforts in the message to the population have, necessarily, that to go towards an Educative and Informative process
of the Chilean Society.
Most excellent of the activity of transplants of year 2006 it was in relation to Liver Transplant. 86 transplants were made that in relation to happened the 2005 (62) represent an increase near 40%.
The significant increase of the number of effective donors, added to the low amount of discarded organs and the increase in the proportion of multiorganic donors it allowed to obtain, year 2006, the greater number of transplants made in the history of our country. It is not left us more than to be thankful to all our coordinators of transplants at national and central level by this great landmark and to urge them to continue working together to maintain in the time this yearned for goal reached with as much effort
