How to be a Donor
YOU CAN BE A DONOR
Organ donation saves plenty new lives. In our country at least 10 people can be helped when a donor becomes available. The obtaining of tissues and organs involve a process that passes throw a number of stages, in which both the patient’s and the family’s desires are always respected. (More information)
 
¿What organs are transplanted in Chile?
  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Heart, Heart – Lungs
  • Lungs
  • Pancreas
  • Tissues: heart valves, bones, corneas, skin.
 
If you want to become a donor you can do it:
  • When you renew your drivers license or identity card
  • With a document signed by notary
  • By filling a document at the time you enter the hospital
  • Filling in a special donor form.
The most important thing to remember is to let your family know you want to be a donor, because the final decision is up to them.
 
Tissue and Organ Procurement Link
  1. Search and warn about the existence of a potential donor all over the country (emergency and intensive care units)
  2. The potential donor is medically evaluated (at the hospital, lab exams)
  3. Brain Death is certified by an specialist (neurologist or neurosurgeon)
  4. Solving medical-legal problems: Arrival of the doctor in charge according to what the law instates.
  5. Contact the family and Donation Request
  6. Take the blood samples and other exams to the “Instituto de Salud Pública”
  7. Beginning of activities for organ extraction (transportation for doctors and their surgery team, extraction, preservation of the extracted organs).
  8. Organ assignation, transportation and transplantation.
  9. Register donors, recipients, medical procedures and guarantee the quality, security and transparence of the system.
